Guide for Commercial Lock Replacement

Security cameras, alarms, and even guard dogs are great, but a reliable lock is the backbone of any security system at your commercial property. Commercial grade locks are built to last a long time and withstand damage or wear and tear, but the time will come when you need a commercial lock replacement. You might be able to make the replacement on your own, but if you wish to leave it to a qualified locksmith, then call Top Atlanta Locksmith to get in touch with a live representative. We can schedule a flexible appointment or arrange an emergency dispatch. We are ready when you are.

Basic Locks

The mortise locks are the most common locks used for general storefront doors. You can tell that your door lock is a mortise lock by opening the door and inspecting the latch or bolt. A mortise lock will be covered by a rectangular piece of metal that is secured to the door with a set of screws. Fortunately, replacing mortise locks can be a quick and easy DIY project. You will have to make sure that your new lock is the correct size so that in can slide in the same pocket as your old lock.

  • Open the door and unscrew the latch plate.
  • Take out the cylinder set screw and insert your key.
  • Turn the key until the threaded cylinder is removed.
  • Insert the new cylinder with the new key inside.
  • Turn the new cylinder until you feel resistance.
  • Back out the cylinder and align it, making sure the keyway is vertical.
  • Test the lock.
  • Fasten the cylinder screw set and re-screw the latch plate.

Push Bars

Push bars, also known as panic bars or exits bars, are not like the usual locks that offer security. Rather, push bars are more for safety and convenience, allowing ease of entrance and exit. They can jam and components can wear out, making it time to replace the push bar. These, too, are easy to replace on your own.

  • Unscrew the headcovers on the latch end of the push bar.
  • Remove the screws securing the bar to the door.
  • Pull the bar away from the door and remove the lever handle.
  • Unscrew the headcover on the hinged side and completely remove the bar.
  • Install the new push bar by following these steps in reverse order.

Electronic Locks

Many modern commercial buildings use electronic locks that allow entry with key cards, access codes, and even biometrics. They are astoundingly secure and convenient but also complex. So, a fault in the coding or electrical components can be difficult to resolve on your own. Replacing electronic locks is challenging and we recommend you leave it to qualified locksmiths as mistakes can be costly.

Top Atlanta Locksmith is happy to offer lock replacements for advanced locks such as electronic locks. Just grab the phone and call Top Atlanta Locksmith to consult with a representative. We can have a locksmith dispatched as soon as possible.
