How to Change Safe Battery When Safe Battery is Dead

A safe is one of the best ways to keep your most valuable items safe. Whether it’s a key safe or an electronic one, they are a great and secure place to store things like important paperwork, passports, money, etc. The one disadvantage that comes with electronic safes in particular is having the batteries die on you. Here at Top Atlanta Locksmith, we want to make sure you have all the knowledge and information you need when it comes to any of your locks, and your safes.

Most safe batteries are meant to last you an average of two years, but some can last longer and some may not last as long as two years. The team at Top Atlanta Locksmith recommends you check them often so you know when it’s time to change them. You’ll want to look for rust or corrosion, if you don’t see any, you are all set. If you do see some, it’s time to replace them.

Depending on the model of safe you have or the age of your safe, it may not be visible to see your battery’s life. If you have a newer electronic safe, you may get alerted by a blinking light. If it is time to change the batteries in your safe, we listed the 3 ways you can change the batteries in your safe.

3 ways to change the batteries in your safe:

1.    Digital keypad lock with override key
This type of safe will have a key that you use to open the safe’s door if your batteries die. One thing every team member at Top Atlanta Locksmith recommends is not storing your override key in your safe – how does it help you open a dead safe when it’s locked in the safe itself? Make sure to store it outside of your safe in a spot that is safe and that you will remember. To get to the battery, there should be a panel on the side of the keypad that you will open to uncover the lock and insert the override key. If you lost or misplaced your override key, give us a call at Top Atlanta Locksmith and we’ll get you back into your safe in no time!

2.    Digital lock with batteries in the keypad
The battery spot will be under or behind the digital keypad, and you will need a nine-volt battery on hand and a paper clip. You’ll want to insert the tool into the panel below the keypad, slide it to the right, and remove the old battery. Next, you’ll want to remove the wire connector and snap it onto the new battery. Put the battery back into its place and put the cover back on.

3.    Digital lock with emergency power supply connection
Depending on your safe, there may be an emergency battery connection point that helps you change the battery in case your current ones die. To open it, you’ll need a nine-volt battery. You’ll want to hold it against the connection point until you have power, then enter your code, open your safe, and replace the old battery. If you can’t seem to get anything to open your electronic safe, give Top Atlanta Locksmith a call today!
