Why Bump Keys Do Not Work on Cars?

Knowing about the bump keys will make you feel safe for a while. For a majority of the car owners, the bump keys seem to be a universal option. However, this is not the case. Bump keys are not that easy to use and if you want to use them, you need to have some knowledge. A little of the knowledge in understanding the limitations of lock bumping. 

One such limitation is the usability over automobiles. You believe it or not, the set of bump keys that you have received will not work on your cars. A bit puzzled? Do not worry as we are here to clear your doubts on this and tell you why the bump keys will not work on your car. 

While we go deep into understanding the functioning of bump keys, we will try to find answers to the following questions:

  • Does a bump resistant car is really secured?
  • Are bump lock and keys work on the same mechanism?
  • Are they easier to use?

Understanding the functioning of a bump key

A bump key simulates a standard pin tumbler lock. When you have a basic understanding of how a lock and key works, it will be easier for you to understand this bump key mechanism as well. We all know that a lock is opened only when the correct key is inserted and in case you place the wrong key, the lock shall remain locked. When the correct key is inserted in the lock, the key will work in tandem with the internal components and help them to retract so that the lock can be opened. 

When we talk about the basic pin tumbler lock, the lock comprises of plenty of stacks of pins and in each stack, you will find three more components namely,

  • Key Pin - there are varying in length
  • Driver Pin - they are of standard lengths
  • Spring - they are all similar

These are all the components that are present in the lock. Furthermore, there are two parts of the pin tumbler lock and they are the plug and the bible. The plug is the cylinder where the key is inserted and the bible is the housing of the same plug. When the key is inserted in the plug, all the driver pins and springs will rest in the bible. When all the pins are separated, the plug will rotate and the lock will be opened.

The main reason why a bump key does not work on the car lock is that the car locks do not use a pin tumbler system. The majority of the automobile locks are like sliders or wafer locks. Look at your car key once, if you can see cuts on both the ends of your key then your car is having a wafer lock or if your key looks like a straight snake, your car is placed with a slider lock. And, both of these locks are different from a pin tumbler lock.
